Build a Bug
This Build a Bug activity was so much fun to do with my oldest. He has been absolutely obsessed with bugs and insects lately, so of course, I wanted to create an activity centered around them! He was invested the second he saw what I had set up!!
We pulled out two of our favorite bug books and flipped through the pages. This one is so fun because it has huge, incredible pop-ups. We also like this one because it’s SO detailed but the perfect level for a toddler to understand. I read to him about bugs and we talked about what the bugs did as we created our own own! This was also a fun way to sneak in some fine motor skill practice as he handled the placement of each item to create his bug!
Dean really had fun using rocks and stones and twigs to create the bugs. I think his favorite part was picking out the perfect stones for each one. If you have a little one that likes insects, they will LOVE this activity. It’s the perfect way to deep dive into learning more information about insects, or just let them have fun being creative.
Build a Bug Set Up:
- Grab your Free Build a Bug Download below and print it on cardstock. (Cardstock is a little more durable for this activity!) You could also laminate these if you plan to use them again!
- Once printed, you can cut out the paper in half to make your individual bug cards.
- Gather some stones, rocks, twigs, and toothpicks. Look for items of all different sizes.
- Build some awesome bugs with your toddler. You can even create your own!
I hope you enjoy this Build a Bug activity as much as we did. It was the perfect morning activity for my toddler. It brought us outside and allowed us to be creative while learning more about bugs.
